Handing Over the Reins
I was visiting from abroad and sitting at the dining table, going through a pile of unopened letters. This was usually my mom’s job, and she had always been on top of her own paperwork. Seeing the stack of mail sitting there untouched was the first sign that the routine was breaking down.
Among them was an insurance bill. it was a policy my mom had paid year after year. It wasn’t a new or strange document; it was a familiar part of her life. But now, she just looked at it as if she had never seen the company name before.
When I asked what the bill was for, she didn’t recognize it. I remember feeling a surge of anxiety. It was a mix of being frightened and confused. I kept thinking, How could you not know what this is? It was a bill she had handled for years.
We didn’t have an argument about it. We simply went to an appointment a few days later to arrange the Power of Attorney. I wanted to make sure we handled the paperwork while the process was still straightforward. I was worried that if we waited too long, things would become much more difficult.
I offered to help with the logistics, and she didn’t say much. She just let it happen. She relinquished the responsibility without a fight, which told me she recognized the situation, too.
I imagine it wasn’t a good feeling for her to let go of something that used to be a strength. But she stayed quiet and let me step in. At the time, I was just taking things one step at a time. I was still living abroad and didn’t realize this was the start of a much bigger shift.
It was just a quiet afternoon, but it was the moment our roles officially changed.
