The Unopened Mail
I was visiting from abroad, sorting through mail at the dining table. My mom always handled this task. Seeing the unopened letters sitting there meant the routine was breaking down.
The Insurance Bill
I found a regular insurance bill she paid every year. The paper was bare, listing just a company name and an amount she had managed with precision for twenty years. Now, she turned the paper over in her hands. She said she didn’t know what the bill was about.
I kept my face completely still. But inside my head, I was panicking. How could you not know what this is? I did not want to hurt her, so I said nothing right away. I spent the next twenty-four hours watching for tiny glitches. By the morning, I knew this wasn’t a one-off mistake. Something was seriously wrong. Right then, I wrote a note to her GP.
Shifting the Weight
Later, she walked past my bedroom door and I casually brought it up. I suggested that I take over managing the accounts. It was a brief conversation, but it felt terrible. I was taking away her independence.
She did not fight me. Her only concern was that she did not want to put the burden on me. She recognized the situation too, and even as she stepped back, she was still trying to be my mother.
Making it Official
We already had the Power of Attorney documents set up years ago. Taking them to the bank made it real. We sat in a small meeting room during their standard compliance process.
My mom just sat there and let me handle the questions. Seeing her just accept it was the most difficult part. At that time, I did not realize this was the start of a much bigger shift. There was no grand drama. It was just a quiet shift in who was in charge, moving from sorting her mail to managing her world.
