How to claim Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit

Managing health costs shouldn’t mean compromising your independence. This refundable credit puts money back in your pocket to help with the rising cost of medical essentials—from hearing aids to in-home care.

The Basics

  • Who qualifies? You (or your spouse) must be 70+ and an Ontario resident.

  • The refund: Get 25% back on claimable expenses (amounts above the 3% net income threshold) up to C$1,500, even if you don’t owe any taxes.

  • Income Limit: Receive full credit under C$35,000 family net income; phased out at C$65,000.

Double (or Triple!) Benefit

A common myth is that you can only claim an expense once. Not true here! You can claim the exact same receipts for this credit even if you’ve already used them for your Federal or other Ontario medical tax credits. It’s a “stackable” win for your budget.

What’s Covered?

It follows the same rules as the Federal Medical Expense list. While there are hundreds of eligible items, here are the common examples:

  • Mobility & Safety: Walkers, wheelchairs, and bathroom aids.

  • Vision, Hearing & Dental: Eyeglasses, hearing aids (and batteries), and dentures.

  • Home Support: Specialized nursing or in-home attendant care.

How to Claim Your Refund

  • Report eligible medical expenses on Federal Return Line 33099 (T1)

  • Transfer totals to Ontario Tax Line 58689 (Form ON428).
Note: Attendant care, adapted vans and medical moves may allow for higher provincial claim limits.

  • Calculate your refund on Ontario Credits (Form ON479) using Line 3.

  • Save receipts for 6 years to stay audit-ready.

Pro Tip: Get a written medical certification before you purchase. It proves the expense is medically necessary and protects your claim if the CRA checks in.
