Don’t Leave Your Refund Behind: The Ontario Seniors’ Public Transit Tax Credit Guide
The 2025 tax season in Canada is here. For many seniors and caregivers in Ontario, "hidden" money is often buried in transit paperwork. My goal with Know Your Folks is to simplify these wins for your family. Claiming this credit helps offset the rising cost of living, covering your groceries or commute costs.
The Essentials
Who qualifies? Must be 65+ living in Ontario.
What counts? Local bus, subway, train, or specialized transit (like TTC Wheel-Trans).
The Best Part: This is a refundable credit. Even if you owe $0 in taxes, you can receive up to C$450 back (15% of up to $3,000 in eligible expenses).
3 Steps to Get Your Cash
Collect: Save all top-up receipts or single-ride tickets in one folder.
Download: If you use transit smart card (like PRESTO), log in to your account to download the usage report as official proof.
Log: For specialized transit, keep a trip log and proof of payment.
Where to Claim it
Form: Use Form ON479 (Ontario Credits).
Line: Enter your eligible transit costs on Line 63100.
Pro-Tip: Keep your records for 6 years. The CRA may ask for them, and you don’t want to be caught empty-handed.
