Staying in the Mix

When my mom started staying home more, I noticed her world got smaller.
Friends can easily drift away if no one keeps the momentum going.
It takes some behind-the-scenes effort to make sure she stays connected.
But it makes a big difference in her daily life.

The Power of Routine

We keep her weekly routine as normal as possible.
She attends her regular Sunday gathering every week.
It’s a familiar space she’s known for years.
She isn’t as talkative now, but being there keeps her anchored.
It’s simply about being present in a place that feels like home.

The Group Lunch

One-on-one visits can be pretty awkward these days.
The silence feels heavy with just two people in the room.
The pressure to carry the conversation is all on her.

I prefer group lunches instead.
The focus spreads out naturally across the table.
Friends chat and laugh with each other.
Mom gets to be in the middle of that familiar energy.
She’s part of the group without the stress of “performing".
She can just relax and enjoy the company.

The Phone Connection

When the phone rings, I don’t just take a message.
I get her on the line.
I stay close by so I can quietly help if there’s a long pause.
I might whisper, “It’s Carol! Say thank you and ask how she is.”

I’m not trying to take over.
I just want to give her the confidence to stay on the line.
Even these chats get shorter or happen less often, they still matter.
It’s about her being engaged for as much as she can.
Those few minutes remind her that she is still in the loop.

Staying Connected

The goal is to prevent the isolation that happens at this stage.
It’s more work to coordinate these outings and calls.
But seeing her still part of her circle is the point.
She’s quieter, but she’s still very much engaged.
