Caregiver Retention: Building a Lasting Relationship
Finding a good caregiver is only half the battle.
Keeping them is the real goal.
It’s not about managing the employee.
It’s about building a mutual relationship.
When you treat a caregiver as a valued part of the team, they care more.
They aren’t just showing up for a shift; they‘re showing up for people.
Stability is the greatest gift you can give a senior.
Staying Connected
We keep the lines of communication open for everyone.
My mom keeps her own notebook to track her day.
This is her private space to jot down what she did or how she’s feeling.
It helps her stay involved and keep a sense of her own timeline.
One of our routines is a quick video check-in.
I video-call my mom while the caregiver is there, and the three of us say a quick hello.
Then, the caregiver gives us some space so my mom and I can have our own private catch-up.
It turns a stranger into a real part of our daily circle.
Takeaway Tip: The Mutual Fit
Relationship-building is a two-way street.
I regularly ask my mom: “How are you two getting along?”
But I also check in with the caregiver to see how they are doing.
If both people feel respected, they are much more likely to stay.
Show appreciation with small, thoughtful gestures—a sincere thank you goes a long way.
When a caregiver feels they belong, they stay.
