Keeping More of Your Savings: A 2025 Ontario Seniors’ Tax Checklist
Tax season is here! I’ve put together this quick guide to make sure you’re claiming every credit you’re entitled to.
Note: The amounts shown are the maximum possible savings—your actual total will depend on your income level and eligible expenses. Most of these apply if you turned 65 in 2025 (exceptions noted below).
Cash Back Credits (Refundable)
These can be paid to you even if you owe $0 in tax:
Multigenerational Home Renovation: Up to $7,500 for building a suite for a senior or family member with disability.
Seniors Care at Home: Up to $1,500 for medical expenses (Age 70+).
Energy & Property Tax: Up to $1,488 via the Trillium Benefit for 2026 benefit year.
Tip: Living in Northern Ontario? You may qualify for an extra $189–$290 through the Northern Ontario Energy Credit.
Property Tax Grant: Up to $500 for home costs (Age 64+).
Public Transit: Up to $450 for local bus or train trips.
Sales Tax Credit: Up to $378 to offset everyday HST for 2026 benefit year.
Tax Reducers (Non-Refundable)
These combine Federal and any applicable Ontario-based rates, plus Top-up federal tax credit, to lower your tax bill directly.
Home Accessibility: Up to $3,000 for safety renos like ramps or walk-in tubs.
Medical Expenses: Cover eligible costs (hearing aids, dental, etc.) that exceed the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,834.
Disability Credit: Up to $2,040 for certified prolonged impairment.
Age Amount: Up to $1,668 for being 65+.
Caregiver Credit: Up to $1,550 for supporting an infirm dependent.
Pension Credit: Up to $389 for private pension income.
Filing Deadline: April 30, 2026
Even if you have no income, you must file to continue receiving your Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and Canada Carbon Rebate payments.
Pro-Tip: Don’t forget Pension Splitting. You can allocate up to 50% of your eligible private pension income to your spouse if they are in a lower bracket. This is often the biggest “hidden” win.
